Machel Jesus Montano is a Trinidad and Tobago singer, songwriter, producer, and bandleader whose career has been central to the growth of soca and its expansion beyond the Caribbean. Born on November 24, 1974, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Montano began performing at the age of seven. At nine, he formed Pranasonic Express and released his debut album, “Too Young to Soca,” in 1985. That same period saw him perform at New York's Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden as a support act for calypso legend Mighty Sparrow and other leading performers. His early appearances established him as an exceptional young talent within Trinidadian music.
As his career developed, Montano became associated with the band Xtatik, later transforming the group into Machel Montano HD in 2007. His energetic Carnival performances and evolving production style helped make him one of soca's most prominent performers. His competition record includes multiple International Soca Monarch victories and numerous Trinidad and Tobago Road March wins, while his 2024 victory in the National Calypso Monarch competition added a major achievement in traditional calypso to his career. He won the 2024 title with “Soul of Calypso” at Dimanche Gras.
Montano has also built an extensive international collaboration record. His work with Major Lazer produced “Soundbang” and later the “All My Love” remix featuring Ariana Grande. He also appeared on Major Lazer's “Front of the Line” with Konshens. Other collaborations have connected him with artists including Pitbull, Nicki Minaj, Busta Rhymes, Shaggy, Bunji Garlin, Skinny Fabulous, Superblue, and Davido. These projects have helped introduce elements of soca to listeners outside its traditional Caribbean audience.
His awards and achievements include the BET Soul Train Award for Best International Performance for “Ministry of Road (M.O.R.)” in 2014, Road March victories in 2016, 2018, and 2019, and his 2018 honorary doctorate in the Arts from the University of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2021, he was inducted into the Young, Gifted & Black Caribbean Music Entertainment ICON Hall of Fame. In 2022, he received the Hummingbird Gold Medal, one of Trinidad and Tobago's national honors, for his contribution to the country.
Montano has continued expanding his international presence through major performances. In 2016, he appeared with Major Lazer at Coachella, while in August 2024 he completed a four-night residency at New York's Apollo Theater. His recent work has maintained his connection to Carnival while also exploring broader Caribbean and African musical relationships. In 2025, his song “Pardy” won the Trinidad and Tobago Road March, adding another major Carnival achievement to his record.
Across more than four decades, Montano has remained committed to developing soca while experimenting with calypso, dancehall, reggae, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. His career combines childhood achievement, Carnival dominance, international collaborations, cultural recognition, and continued creative experimentation, making him one of the most important figures in the history and international development of Trinidadian soca.
